Abu Dhabi, the UAE''s capital, is calmer and often cheaper than Dubai, with just as much to see — grand culture, family theme parks and a green oasis city inland. Here''s how to plan a visit.
What to see
Start with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in the world (robes provided; dress modestly). On Saadiyat Island, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a must, with more of the cultural district still growing. Qasr Al Hosn and Qasr Al Watan tell the story of Emirati heritage and statecraft. For families and thrill-seekers, Yas Island packs in Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld and the Formula 1 circuit. Inland, the oasis city of Al Ain offers palm groves, forts and UNESCO-listed sites at a slower pace.
Best time to visit
October to April for pleasant weather; the peak of summer is intensely hot. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in late season is a major draw and books out early.
Getting around
Buses and taxis are cheap and reliable — use the Hafilat card for buses — and Careem/Uber operate throughout. A car or booked driver makes reaching Yas Island, Saadiyat and Al Ain much easier.
Know before you go
As the capital, Abu Dhabi is relatively conservative: dress modestly, especially at the Grand Mosque, and follow the usual UAE rules on alcohol and public behaviour. It''s extremely safe. Confirm opening hours and ticket prices before visiting.
