What to see and do
Jebel Jais, the country''s tallest mountain, is the centrepiece: hiking trails, viewing decks, a via ferrata and the record-breaking Jais Flight zipline. Below the peaks, a desert safari among the dunes, quiet lagoon beaches, hot springs and interior archaeological sites round out the picture. A growing crop of desert and beach resorts makes RAK a favourite for romantic escapes and slow, restorative stays.
Best time to visit
October to April for hiking and comfortable beach days; summer is too hot for serious mountain activity in the middle of the day.
Getting around
A car is strongly recommended — the mountains, desert and beaches are spread out and public transport is limited. It''s roughly an hour''s drive from Dubai.
Know before you go
RAK is very safe, but some northern areas keep more traditional customs, so dress modestly away from resorts. On Jebel Jais, stick to marked trails, carry plenty of water, and check conditions before hiking in warmer months.
