When to go

April to October is the dry season and the best window for Bali, Java and most islands.

Visa & entry

Many visitors can enter visa-free or buy a visa on arrival for short stays, with an e-VOA available online. Allowances depend on your nationality and purpose of travel, so check the latest requirements before departure.

Health & safety

Indonesia is welcoming and safe for most travellers. Respect local customs and dress modestly at temples, be aware of strong ocean currents when surfing or swimming, and check volcano advisories when trekking.

Getting around

Flights link the major islands, while Bali and Java have ride-hailing apps, private drivers and scooters. Ferries connect neighbouring islands; hiring a local driver for a day is affordable and easy.

Money

Cash is king outside tourist hubs. ATMs are common in cities and resort areas, but carry rupiah for warungs, markets and rural areas.
