Highlights
Lake Issyk-Kul, the world's second-largest alpine lake, anchors the country — ringed by beaches, hot springs and the trekking hub of Karakol, gateway to the Ala-Kul lake and Altyn-Arashan valley. Higher and wilder, Song-Kul is a vast summer-pasture lake where families still bring their herds and yurts, and travellers stay overnight under staggering stars.
The capital Bishkek is leafy and Soviet-planned, a relaxed base with good food and bazaars. To the south, the ancient Silk Road city of Osh and its sacred Sulaiman-Too mountain mark the entrance to the Pamir region.
Community-Based Tourism (CBT) networks make it uniquely easy to arrange horse treks, yurt stays and homestays directly with local families — the best way to experience nomadic life. Trekkers love the Jyrgalan valley, Ala-Archa national park near Bishkek, and multi-day routes over high passes.
When to go
June to September is the trekking and horse-riding season, when the high jailoo (summer pastures) turn green, mountain passes open and the lakes warm up — July and August are busiest and best for the highest routes.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (late September-October) are beautiful and quiet but cold at altitude, with some passes still snowbound. Winter is long and severe, spectacular for skiers and ski-tourers around Karakol but impassable for most high-mountain travel.
Visa & entry
Kyrgyzstan is one of the most visa-friendly countries in the region: many nationalities enjoy visa-free entry for stays of up to 60 days, and others can obtain a straightforward eVisa online. A passport valid for the duration of your stay is generally sufficient.
Because the visa-free list and durations do change, verify the current allowance for your nationality on the official Kyrgyz eVisa / Ministry of Foreign Affairs website before you fly. If trekking near sensitive border zones (Pamir, some Tajik/Uzbek border areas), a separate border permit may be required.
Health & safety
Kyrgyzstan is welcoming and generally safe, with hospitality a point of national pride. The main risks are environmental: altitude on high treks, fast-changing mountain weather, and river crossings — go with a guide or established CBT operator for remote routes.
In Bishkek and Osh, use normal city precautions against petty theft, and be cautious around occasional political demonstrations. Roads can be rough and drivers fast; medical facilities are basic outside the capital, so carry insurance covering mountain rescue. Check your government's current advisory, particularly for border areas, before departure.
Getting around
Shared taxis and marshrutkas (minibuses) are the backbone of intercity travel — cheap, frequent on main routes, and informal, so allow flexibility and expect them to leave when full. For the mountains, hiring a driver with a sturdy 4x4, or booking transfers through CBT offices, is the practical way to reach trailheads and yurt camps.
Bishkek has a domestic airport with flights to Osh and other towns, saving the long mountain drive south. Within cities, taxis (including the Yandex app) are inexpensive.
Money
The Som is a cash economy, especially in rural areas, yurt camps and small towns where cards are useless — withdraw enough in Bishkek, Karakol or Osh before heading into the mountains. ATMs are reliable in cities and accept international cards.
US dollars and Euros are easily exchanged at competitive rates (bring clean, newer notes). Cards are accepted in city hotels, supermarkets and better restaurants. Tipping is not deeply ingrained but rounding up or leaving a little for good service and guides is appreciated.
